On the evening of 24th March 2020, the government of India ordered a nationwide lockdown. It's been a year and a more since we left our normal life behind. The Covid-19 pandemic created a major upheaval in the entertainment industry. Although the pandemic has had a lot of negative impacts on the film industry, it hasn't been entirely grim. 

During the lockdown, access to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and other services skyrocketed. This isn't to say that anyone has instantly become a film buff; rather, these outlets have a plethora of viewing opportunities for those stuck at home. The quality and variety of programmes available on these portals greatly exceed what is available on television. 9. Joji

Will he succeed in achieving his dreams? This film is firstly a treat to the eye. This level of filmmaking I've seen only in Malayalam films. Yes, the cinematography is breathtaking, showing the lush green landscapes of Kerala and the camerawork and all, but the acting is what stands out for me. Fahadh Faasil, like what can be said that hasn't already been said about this guy? This guy is a joy to look at. The BGM is tense and adds gravitas to the scenes. Splendid job, Joji team. Loved it. An intense slow burner thriller, now streaming on Prime Video.

8. Ram Singh Charlie

Stars: Kumud Mishra, Divya Dutta, Salima Raza

In a circus, Ram Singh used to play Charlie. But when the circus's owners decided to close it down, Ram Singh had no choice but to start running rickshaws for a living. But then one day, his wife suggests that he restart the circus. Accepting his wife's advice, he sets out to restart the circus. But then the unexpected happens that his dream remains incomplete. No matter however hard we try, sometimes things never materialise the way we desire, Ram Singh Charlie is one such beauty. Only the father denies his own need for a boy. A father is still a Joker; whatever life forces him to do, he will do solely for the sake of his kids. This film is really well written, and it is not at all like a traditional Bollywood film. All of the actors have delivered outstanding performances. Available on Sony Liv.

7. Karnan

The film is really hard-hitting and each and every frame would be real. The beauty of the film lies in the visually pleasing cinematography. Mari Selvaraj tells his story with beautiful shots. The angles capture the emotion of each and every character. I would salute Mari Selvaraj for taking up such a serious social issue presenting it in a well-written film. Karnan's major strength is the writing, especially of the characters. Every character has a purpose and a scope to perform. This movie makes you feel emotional. This film disturbs you so much. The story and screenplay were top notch. Dhanush's lifetime performance. Karnan is streaming on Prime Video. 

6. Nayattu

Three police officers who are on a run for life, escaping the outbreak against them due to the unlawful arrest and torture of a civilian. It brings in a few shades of arrogant yet very much human police officers and their helplessness. Nayattu is not a film but a slap to the dirty system which includes politicians, police, casteism wolves and unfortunately common man too. The communication between the makers and the viewers do not stop at the movie. The viewer is forced to prove his own conscience. And that is the power of the movie. A movie that shows us the real colour of events happening around us and the harsh reality of the life of an average police officer amidst social and political pressure. 5. Soorarai Pottru

Stars: Suriya, Paresh Rawal, Aparna, Urvashi

The film tells the storey of Nedumaaran Rajangam, better known by his friends as Maara, the son of a teacher, who sets out to make the common man soar by taking on the world's most capital intensive industry with the aid of his friends, family, and sheer willpower. The struggle level in this film is on such a hectic level that one might have given up long ago but this man was blessed to have a highly supporting wife, mother, friends and his own troops who stood with him against powerful enemies. Every character in the film is beautifully written with detailing to the core and easily connectable nature whether it is positive or negative. Suriya in the lead role is unstoppable right from the first scene. His different looks, different reactions, different situations and different expressions could be felt as if he was living the character in reality. Finest Biography and great motivational content. 4. Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi

The movie begins with Ram Prasad's death, the Bauji of the family. The entire family gathers under one roof to perform the final rites of the head of the family. For the next thirteen days, they are stuck with each other and in this journey, the family faces its issues, insecurities, greed, hopelessness, and much more. There are no villains here. Just the understanding that humans are flawed, relationships are fragile, and yet, we must strive, as best as we can, to be happy. Ram Prasad ki Tehrvi is not a typical Bollywood fantasy film but is close to reality. The idea of the film is simple and subtle. Such films are not everyone's cup of tea because of their slow pace. The film takes time to develop and reveal its characters. But it is highly recommended indeed! A special shout out to Seema Pahwa who is one such person whose career in the second half has taken off and how! Her writing is brilliant and on point. Kudos to her for bringing life into this film with her writing and direction who has made her way into a male-dominated industry. This movie is streaming on Netflix India. 

3. The Great Indian Kitchen

The film revolves around the story of a newly married woman who tries to be the ideal daughter-in-law and a wife and in that process how she loses her own identity, her individuality but at the end manages to break free from the chain of a patriarchal mindset. Women in this film are either shown to be victims of patriarchy or someone who supports patriarchy which is sad but at the same time, it's a perfect reflection of our society. Patriarchy has become so normalized that we do not even realize that it has become an integral part of us knowingly or unknowingly. I would recommend everyone to watch this underrated gem of a movie. It will make your brain churn out of sheer frustration and suffocation and one might feel claustrophobic. But it is an important issue to be addressed and Joe Baby has done it with such beauty. A film that flaunts the hideous truth of patriarchy and misogyny in our daily lives. It is streaming on Amazon Prime India.

2. Mandela

This is a fantastic movie. It has got plenty of comedies and quite a bit of emotion. It got scenes with extremely realistic incidents which can be easily compared and understand with real-world political stands. One of the best political satire films I've seen recently. The film delves into every aspect of democracy in such a delicate way that you'll be hooked until the very end. The cast and crew deserve applause for bringing such beauty to life on-screen. Well, it is a work of art that will make you reflect on the strength of democracy, which is in our possession, but do we ever take it seriously? Rather than being sold out for few bucks in the hands of the politicians, it's the common man's responsibility to make them work for the development and strive for every vote of ours. Drishyam 2: The Resumption is a sequel to the 2013 Drishyam. A Malayalam language crime mystery film produced by Antony Perumbavoor. After six years, Drishyam 2 starts where we left Drishyam, but the never-ending probe hits once again to rock the family. all you get to see in the film is how the police figure out the unknown facts and how Georgekutty prepares a fresh script to rescue his family. Drishyam 2 has a script within a script, a movie within a movie. (Nolan would love to shake a hand with Jeethu Joseph). As said 'a crime which is once done haunts forever'. The first half is a slow burner slow-paced drama that is emotionally powerful. Writing is brilliant, you will have a mind-boggling experience. Dialogues are decent so is the cinematography. The twists and turns would go on increasing and at one point you will doubt everyone and starts playing the guesswork. We watched together as both families and not a single one managed to predict it right. Go with the highest expectation you have, still, this sequel will exceed your expectations.
